It might be true. It might not. How are you raising these animals? Industrial farms are odd mixtures of efficiency and inefficiency. And there’s no way to unpack that completely here. But, you set some cows out to graze on pasture where you could never grow a monoculture vegetable crop without intensive irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and industrial pesticides… Does it matter whether it uses more water? And even if you were to buy that beef from Farmer Dave, you’re still paying for all those resources you consumed. If I bought a head of lettuce, would you complain if I bought 10 heads of lettuce? Or, is that more lettuce than any person needs? Is it wasteful? Is that water-inefficient? Well, what if I fed those 10 heads of lettuce to a pig? And what if we skipped the bullshit, and Farmer Dave just fed his own pigs? And, this inefficiency doesn’t just go in one direction.
